Description

What is a truly loving and intimate relationship? Noted Jungian analyst Dr. James Hollis suggests in his Introduction to The Eden Project: In Search of the Magical Other two things that seem to be different than what you would expect when reflecting on the nature of intimate relationships. First, he contends that the quality of all of our relationship is a direct function of our relationship to ourselves. And, second, he encourages us to understand that the best thing we can do for our relationships with others is to render our relationship to ourselves more conscious. Why this focus on yourself rather than on your partner?

This one day workshop will examine the true nature of love and intimate relationships and the power of the five stages of projection that contribute to the bitter disappointment that accompanies so many of them. Through both didactic information and experiential exercise, this workshop will suggest the ways in which the dynamics of our search for love and intimacy actually play out concretely in day-to-day interactions with our Magical Other, and what you can do to work through these dynamics when they (inevitably) become problematic. The key, of course, is to know how to have a relationship with yourself, and ways to cultivate this within the context of relationships will be demonstrated.

Learning Objectives

Following the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the source of the search for the Magical Other in yourself and in your clients;
  • Define the five inner dynamics of projection and how they impact on intimacy;
  • Clarify the four principles of intimate relationships in your life and in the lives of your clients;
  • Explain how sexuality dovetails with love and intimacy, and how difficulties in one area are associated with difficulties in the other;
  • Analyze how the search for the Magical Other also colors relationships at work and in other aspects of your life and the lives of your clients; and
  • Apply techniques for managing problems with love and in intimate relationships both in your own life and in the lives of your clients.
